Introduction:

  • Pre-assess student knowledge.

Materials:

 

Activity Worksheet 1 printouts, 1 per group of 5 - 6 students.


Activities:

  1. Discuss the question: “Where do you get your information?
  2. Discuss the question: “How do you know if your information is reliable? “
  3. Conduct an investigation/critique activity around the issue of credibility.
    • Break the students up into groups of 5 - 6.
    • Give the students Activity Worksheet 1, which also has some guidelines for the activity. You may want to briefly go over these with your class.
    • Have each group summarize their critique in front of the class. 4. Introduce the search curriculum unit.
  4. Introduce a brief outline of the anchor task. Explain that it will be about copyright law, and they will need to become effective researchers on the Internet in order to complete the task. The anchor task will be addressed fully in Lesson

  • Does the discussion indicate whether the students have an understanding of how to look for reliability in news articles?
  • Was the class able to list many sources of information?
  • Do the students understand the purpose of this unit?

  • This lesson is an introduction to the Web Search curriculum. The goal of this lesson is to familiarize students with the content they will be learning in the next few weeks.
  • You should familiarize yourself with the curriculum goals and the anchor task before this lesson. Much of the information that will help the discussion is in the Appendix.
